EU clears AT&T buy of IBM communications network

April 23, 1999 04:43 AM
BRUSSELS, April 23 (Reuters) - The European Commission has granted regulatory clearance in the European Union to AT&T's acquisition of the global data communications network of International Business Machine Corp (IBM), a source close to the EU review said on Friday.

"The deal received clearance on Thursday," the source told Reuters.

The Commission is expected to make an announcement later on Friday.

U.S. telecommunications giant AT&T has agreed to buy IBM's Global Network business for $5 billion.

The deal was filed for regulatory clearance in the EU on March 18 because the two companies, although both American, do substantial business in the 15-nation bloc.
