<what happens when all of the domains are taken? >

I seem to remember five digit phone numbers, 3 digit access codes etc. the names available are limited only by man's imagination as long as the proliferation is orderly and uniform. a reason why nsol will likely continue to dominate and hold the database.

That's like saying companies won't be able to find a name for their business because all the good ones are taken. As many have said before the only limitation on "good" domain names is the creativity, imagination, and effort the companies are willing to put into it.

To answer your question relating to deferring the income from registrations read "A Powerful Business Model" at www.netsol.com/nsi/facts.html.

A Powerful Business Model

"Network Solutions applies a conservative revenue recognition policy. The Company requires up front payment for each initial two-year domain name subscription and receives annual renewals thereafter. Net revenue is booked on a monthly basis over the registration period. A compelling comparison can be made that highlights the market power of the Company's operating cash flow and deferred revenue business model, a model that adds considerable predictability to the future revenue stream. From the 1.9 million net new registrations in 1998 the company brought in over $133 million in revenue, of which only $32 million was recognized in 1998, with the remaining $101 million going to the balance sheet as net deferred revenue. Subsequently while Network Solutions recorded net income of $11 million on revenue of nearly $94 million for 1998, the Company's business strategy generated over $63 million in operating cash flow over the same time frame."
