Good points. Your comments certainly change my way of thinking about it.

Let's see.....not all special charges are "write offs" (or losses), such as the special one-time charge for the "bad" jaz disks back in 1997.

In the case of an acquisition, if the value of the asset being acquired is "appraised" as greater in value than the cost, the transaction could actually be recorded as a gain.....sure makes sense to me.

So, the bottom line here is the net loss/gain from such an acquisition will still show up as a special one-time charge against or gain to the net operating earnings number so a "final" net earnings number (and net EPS) can be calculated....is that correct?
