Upon Approval ?

"Upon approval as CLEC in the additional 12 states, CBS plans to establish itself as a competitive carrier of telecommunications services initially in 40 of the most populous cities in the United States"

Upon approval as CLEC, any company would want to establish itself as a competitive carrier.

I notice they mention Los Angeles as one of the 40 cities where they plan to establish services. Perhaps they may wish to narrow that down just a little bit.

POPULATION:
City of Los Angeles: 3.6 million
County of Los Angeles: 9.4 million
Los Angeles Five-County Area: 15.5 million

The Los Angeles Five-County area population is larger than any state excluding California, New York and Texas.

Los Angeles ranks as the second largest city in the nation.

SIZE:
City of Los Angeles: 467 square miles
County of Los Angeles: 4,083 square miles
Los Angeles Five-County Area: 34,149 square miles

Due to its large population, Los Angeles has many telephone area codes. The 323 area code was introduced in some of the areas that were served by 213 including Hollywood, Eagle Rock, Watts, West Hollywood and Laurel Canyon. The 213 area code will remain in a three-mile diameter region in Downtown Los Angeles. Until Jan. 16, 1999, both area codes will still work in the area covered by the new change. 310 and 424 area codes include Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) area and West Los Angeles.

And this is not mentioning the other area codes that make up Five-County Area. 818, 646, 562, 714, 949, 909

GEOGRAPHY:
Los Angeles spans a widely diverse geographic area. Primarily a desert basin, the area is surrounded by the San Gabriel Mountain range, and divided by the Santa Monica Mountains. The region includes 160 miles of coastline and altitudes ranging from nine feet below to 10,080 above sea level. Area rivers include the Los Angeles, Rio Hondo, San Gabriel and Ventura rivers.

For what it's worth the IG2 technology was mentioned by COVD's CEO on a recent CNBC interview as a major competitor.

China Telecom Chooses VocalTec to Supply Full Turnkey
Solution for Nationwide Ip Telephony Trial Network

Business Wire - April 26, 1999 11:12

HERZLIYA, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 1999--VocalTec Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq: VOCL) today announced that China Telecom has chosen VocalTec to provide a full turnkey Internet protocol (IP) telephony solution for its nationwide IP Telephony Trial Network.

China Telecom is the largest telecommunications carrier in China. Today's news is being announced at a ceremony in Beijing attended by an Israeli state delegation to China including the President of Israel, Ezer Weizman, high officials from the Chinese Government, Doron Zinger, president and CEO of VocalTec, and senior officials of China Telecom.

China Telecom has chosen VocalTec's end-to-end IP telephony software solution based on the VocalTec Ensemble Architecture multi-service platform after intensive technical testing.

China Telecom's selection of VocalTec is based on VocalTec's complete platform. As part of the turnkey solution, VocalTec is also providing the supporting hardware for this project.

Scheduled to launch for service trials shortly, China Telecom's IP Telephony Trial Network will connect China Telecom's Chinanet, the largest nationwide managed IP network, and the public switched telephone network (PSTN) based on the VocalTec Ensemble Architecture end-to-end solution. Initially, a network operation center (NOC) has been installed in Beijing which will include the VocalTec Gatekeeper, the nerve center of the IP telephony network for centralized control of routing, billing and network management. VocalTec Telephony Gateways, which convert voice calls between circuit and packet switched networks, have also been installed.

VocalTec also announced that the company is opening an office in Beijing to assist China Telecom as it serves its rapidly growing market. In a nation of over 1.2 billion people, China has more telephone lines than any country except the United States. With its current growth rate, China will soon have more telephone lines than any other country.

"We are honored to have been chosen by China Telecom, the largest carrier in China," said Doron Zinger, president and chief executive officer at VocalTec Communications. "Today's announcement is further proof that IP telephony is becoming a preferred platform for established carriers and that the VocalTec Ensemble Architecture is a leading choice for the rapid deployment of basic and enhanced IP telephony services. We are in the process of opening an office in China to expand our presence in the Asia-pacific market and to better service China Telecom and other carriers in the region."
