Wrong, that is a bit naive

Criminals using a gun on defenseless citizens is a real event, something we feel we can defend against by owning and knowing how to use a gun.

Wearing a hardhat in anticipation of a comet hitting earth is naive.

The actions of these two murderers was an extraordinary event, more like a comet, unpredictable or at least unpredicted. Everyday criminal behavior happens every day.
