Hmm, I have never had any actual experience on shorting as such, so I can't say one way or the other.

But if providing the shares to cover would cause the term to NOT be extended, then -- simply BUY IN TO COVER, recognize a short term gain or loss and then SELL the ORIGINAL shares for a long-term gain.
