DMA,

During the 1980's the deficit went from $50 billion to $300 billion, and the national debt went from $1 trillion to $5 trillion.

In 1992 many believed that the national debt would cripple the economy. Ross Perot was so concerned that he wanted to implement a 40 cent per gallon gas tax.

One man-Bill Clinton kept a level head about this. He pushed the 1993 Deficit Reduction Act through Congress, cut the deficit in half (which led to lower interest rates), and the rest is history. We now have a balanced budget despite $200 billion a year in interest payments on his predecessor's excesses.

For this accomplishment alone, Bill Clinton will be remembered as a great President.
