Do they buy Excite or Yahoo? The DOJ would love that! Plus, the price would be outrageous.

There's always INKT. Inktomi is a software/technology company that would fit very well in Microsoft's corporate culture were it not for all those Unix machines they use. But even that isn't a huge hurdle, since Microsoft has learned with Hotmail that it's OK to let a division run its services on another platform.

I'm not saying that it will happen, but only that it's the kind of company that Microsoft might be looking at. I'm sure there are other startup companies out there working on the same kind of network cache server and search software that Inktomi creates.

On a smaller level, Google has great software that could enhance the msn portal. They might even consider talking Compaq out of doing an IPO for AltaVista to sell it.

Why couldn't they buy YHOO, Lindy? It's way expensive (75 mill? says a friend, 110 in 6 months) but they'd lock up the best portal on the web--and they've got more than enough cash to do so.

They can't steal YHOO or AOL--the eyeballs are already owned. They need to acquire something big.

The DOJ is the bugaboo right now--I wish they'd settle so they could just get it done and move ahead. It's not that their stock persay is hurt, it's the distraction that hurts when Internet years are hummingbird years.

Well LindyBill, that is the magic question. I think it's a given that MSFT will not buy a richly valued business in the market unless there is a compelling reason to pay the multiple.

We shall see. I am doing as much DD as I can, but this is a tough call.

I am starting to wonder if INTC is following the same path by attempting a buyout of COMS.

Things are going to get real interesting.

Bill, Mr. Softee definitely has something up its sleeve (as usual). Bill's not hoarding that 21B so he can count it at night; he's got a target in his sights. My bet is on a broadband acquisition; it's the piece of the puzzle that could put msft right in the middle of high (make that higher) valuation territory.
