Mike, this Columbine tragedy and the Ramsey case are demonstrations that the closely sheltered and seemingly "isolated" world of John Denver's idyllic Colorado Rocky Mountain splendor have met the "real" world. The authorities just are not used to dealing with these types of events because there have historically been so few.

It is very telling that one of the first parents to arrive at Columbine on Tuesday told the media "I can't believe this has happened here. We always felt like we were isolated from things like this."

Take a good look at that quote and maybe we are getting part of our answer as to why this happened. The wide-eyed disbelief initially is very telling. That these were the sons of dual income, professional workers who are just as stunned as the rest of us is even more telling. Especially since these kid's goal was to blow up the entire school and everything and everyone in it. Essentially, they wanted to eradicate the world as they knew it. They saw the world, what their parents had worked for, what they had accomplished, and basically concluded -- no thanks.
