ompaq Web Advisory: Compaq Trounces Sun In Java Performance-1-

Business/Technology Editors

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 1999--

Compaq Tru64(tm) UNIX(R) DS20 AlphaServer Runs Java(tm) Apps
62% Faster than Sun Solaris

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) reinforced its 64-bit
leadership by announcing its Java Development Kit (JDK) running its
latest Fast Java Virtual Machine (Fast JVM) for Tru64 UNIX has
generated performance results far greater than reported by Sun
Microsystems. The industry's first 64-bit implementation of Java
attained an unprecedented 29.1 SPECjvm98(tm) result, exceeding the
best-published Sun Solaris result of 18.0 by 62 percent. Compaq's
VolanoMark(tm) results were equally impressive, generating results of
4792 messages per second for 200 concurrent connections, 158 percent
faster than the best results reported in the March 1999 edition of
JavaWorld magazine.
The announcements were the latest demonstration of Compaq's
long-term commitment to providing a significant performance advantage
for customers building complex distributed Java applications in a
Tru64 UNIX environment. For more information on Compaq's core Java
technology for Tru64 UNIX, including the Fast JVM and industry leading
performance results, please visit compaq.com.
Compaq's SPECjvm98 and VolanoMark 2.1 numbers were generated on a
single-processor Compaq AlphaServer DS20 a 500Mhz EV6-based machine
with 256MB, 128 GB of StorageWorks online storage, running Compaq
Tru64 UNIX Version 4.0E. The test involved Compaq's Java Development
Kit (JDK) V1.1.7B using the March 1999 released UNIX Fast JVM beta, an
updated Just-in-time (JIT) compilation technology with superior memory
management and execution. The SPECjvm98 benchmarks compared Compaq
against Sun in a comparably equipped Sun Ultra 60 Model 1360.

Compaq <CPQ.N> directors mull role of CEO - WSJ

HOUSTON, April 23 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. <CPQ.N>
directors are considering asking a future chief executive to set
up a power-sharing office after the recent ouster of CEO Eckhard
Pfeiffer, the Wall Street Journal said on Friday.
"More and more, complex and large companies are choosing to
have an office of the chief executive," the newspaper quoted R.
Ted Enloe III, one of three directors sharing acting CEO duties,
as saying in an interview after the company's annual meeting. He
cited General Electric Co. as an example, the newspaper said.
Pfeiffer, who resigned on Sunday, has defended his
leadership of Compaq, blaming the board of the personal computer
maker for some of its problems.
Since the weekend departures of Pfeiffer and Chief Financial
Officer Earl Mason, Compaq's board has pinpointed slow decision
making as a problem at the world's largest PC maker.
During the nearly two-hour meeting, directors heard a litany
of complaints by shareholders ranging from the timing of insider
sales to poor performance of Compaq stock compared with rivals,
the newspaper said.
Enloe said the board intends to address the power-sharing
arrangement with all candidates for the position. Several
stockholders complained about the rash of insider sales before
the company's warning on April 9 of an earnings shortfall.

El,

No, I can't think of anything that would be earth-shattering. While I think it is good, and necessary, for that matter, to maximize business opportunities from any and all venues, I, unfortunately, just do not see significant volume out of RS to be a stock mover (if that is what you are looking for).

But, every bit helps!!
