Kumar is nutty -- but he makes a good point or two there ... to grow volumes GTW has to get down in the trenches -- ASPs will have to fall considerably in the next two quarters -- country stores will look like a lot of fat at some point ...

Gary, I wonder why SmartMoney didn't choose to run any comments from Kumar's GTW report back in March in which he opined that there was "minimal risk" of GTW failing to meet his .64 a share estimate (which of course he lowered from .90 after jacking it up to .90 from .59).

That "minimal risk" line looked like him being his typical "quotable" self (IMHO - a grandstanding, media-whoring, "swing-for-the-fences-and-blame-everyone-but-yourself-when-you-fail" type of jackass) back when he wrote it and now that GTW's numbers did miss his numbers what's his reaction? He cuts it.

This statement:
"To maintain share, Gateway will have to proactively address the value segment, where growth will come at the expense of higher priced units. We are concerned with increased competitive pressure emanating from excess Compaq channel inventory and aggressive posturing by Dell in the consumer space,"...

Weren't his first two points true back when he was pumping up his estimates from .59 to .90 back in February and the threat of DELL eventually entering the "value segment" (if that's what he means) always sort of a "not if, but when and with what level of committment" type of deal?

Instead of vommiting back his latest bon mots, it would have been nice to see SmartMoney note that .59 to .90 and then .90 to .64
in the span of roughly three weeks represents a total change of .57 cents per share.

The company made how much?

How uncurious are these journalists?

Here we are dealing with a guy whose changes over that Feb-MArch period alone represent over 92% of what the company actually made in the entire quarter and exceeds what the company had made over recent quarters and the best SmartMoney can do is give him a free-pass?

Good trading,

Tom
