Depy...just to clear up a couple things: there are no market makers on the NYSE, they are called specialists. MM's are on the Nasdaq and control stock trades very differently. If you have access to a quote that gives you the bid x ask size then you can see where the stock will uptick. If the size of the ask is 10, that means that if someone buys 1000 shares (add 2 zeros) the stock will usually uptick. There are some complications to this when the specialists and mm's "refresh" their bids, but in general that should answer your question.
