Mary, If I am not mistaken, I believe that QWEST and LVLT plan to do these exact things as an adjunct to their "pipes" bis. WEB hosting,servers, data centers, etc.

now pretty much anything that a mainframe can do?

No. Same reasons as in post #54730, about a year ago today. Servers are innovating to get closer but S390 is not standing still either. In IBM's earnings report this week, it came out that they were up 80% in terms of MIPS, 1Q99 vs. 1Q98.
