WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate has begun debate on what many feel
could be the real Year 2000 computer crisis - the economic
meltdown caused by thousands of lawsuits. "This is a very, very
serious issue," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., chief sponsor of
legislation that seeks to limit litigation resulting from the
so-called Y2K computer problem. "The potential drain on the
economy is staggering." One commonly cited estimate puts the
litigation from Y2K at $1 trillion, far exceeding damages sought
in breast implant or asbestos lawsuits. McCain's bill would give
companies up to 90 days to fix computer problems before having to
face lawsuits, and would encourage mediation, put caps on
punitive damage and limit class action lawsuits.

*** Boeing rocket fails to launch --'''':<

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - The launch countdown went all the way
down to zero, but Boeing's new Delta III rocket never lifted off.
The rocket remained on the pad after failing to ignite late
Thursday. It was the fourth time in two weeks that Boeing tried
to launch the rocket with an Orion broadcasting satellite.
"3-2-1, zero. Plus-1. Plus-2. And we had a hang fire or a
misfire," the launch commentator announced. Neither the core
stage of the rocket nor the strap-on boosters fired. The company
will try again early next week. The Delta III is key to Boeing's
plan to grab more of the launch market. The rocket is designed to
carry twice as much payload as the smaller Delta II. See
