i think i'll pass on going into the registry. especially for something as inconsequential as icons. if i'm going to go in there and scramble eggs, i want it to be for a more compelling reason. <gg> but then again, having said that, maybe i'll just go look around a bit. i also have the .gif or .bmp files as desktop icons question out on another message board, and i'll probably put it out to a couple more before i'm done. if i learn more, i'll be glad to share. essentially, the piece i was reading was advocating the "easy way" (as you referred to it). easy, perhaps, but successful, not. thank you very much for the informative posts, pw. :) mark

Backup stuff: Just musing about backup. If Windows won't start, how do you restore your system if you've made a backup using Windows' backup utility? Here's the answer. You NEED to make a bootable floppy. This allows you to start your system in DOS. Once running with DOS, you need to do a system recovery. Here's how: Boot to DOS. Format hard disk. Insert Windows98 CD Copy CD's 'Win98' contents to hard drive. (To C:\Win98\.) Copy CD-ROM:\Tools\SysRec\PCRestore.Bat to C:\ (The root) Copy CD-ROM:\Tools\SysRec\MSBatch.Inf to C:Change to root of hard drive 'CD C:\' Run PCRestore.Bat Setup starts and you answer the prompts System recovery launches Microsoft Backup and restores your system. You choose to overwrite your files and the registry. Choose restart when prompted. When the dust settles, you'll have your system the way it was when you did the backup. Hope this helps. PW. P.S.
