Doug: Optimum strategy??? That is like wanting a "swinger" that won't "swing"! There are "no foolproof" strategies that I know of concerning the market. The only wish that I want the genie to provide me is just one...Monday's closing prices on prior Friday! No need to ask for the other two! Getting back to todays action...this kind of volumn is no "fluke" based strickly on "rumors"...nor speculative nature! Something is "pushing" 3com...it is my belief that it entails a "major" restructuring or "buy out" of the organization and WS (smart money) is sprinkling it with "holy water"...either way...the bride is heading to the altar to meet her "new groom" ie new CEO or new Owner! My chips are on the table for Claflin...WS respects him and as I have been saying...he is well respected amongst his peers and those who "work with him". He has a "work with attitude...not a work for attitude"!
Claflin would NEVER have come on board if he had any vibs that 3com would be "up for sale" within a year! Once Benhamou recognized the USRX mistake... he brought Claflin on board...knowing that he would not be around after USRX disaster was public knowledge...Board recognizes that the only alternative facing them is "Major Restructure"! I believe that benhamou will resign on a weekend or Board will make an announcement rather shortly. Employee morale is at a very low level...indicative of lack of confidence in (benhamou) leadership. They (employee's) won't express it to him directly but from what I have heard from the "grapevine" in silicon valley...a lot of employees are "pissed off"! Many feel "betrayed" by their Management...they are shareholders also and react much the same as you and I. They've seen their top mgmt get "Rich" @ 49/sh while they have lost a considerably chunk of their "retirement" portfolio! It is quite simple...when the General loses the respect of his troops...he has lost their "fighting spirit" and cannot lead. Troops go into battle with a strong leader who gives them confidence that they will win... not lose! If you lose 50% of your "assets" in a battle...it does not take a genius to figure out the effect on the remaining "assets". Higher Command recognizes this "danger" to the Operation(s) and will react very quickly in a "reassignment"! Replacement will usually be someone within the immediate command structure that has the confidence and respect of the remaining "assets" to increase or limit "morale"!
Sooooo, I've said it quite a few times....benhamou & cadre have to leave for "balanced best interest(s) of 3com"! I believe WS is reacting to such and may have some idea as to "new leadership".
High volumn may be indicative to such knowledge...powers than be know the names before they are announced...regardless of what the rules may state! I hope no one is so naive not to recognize this factor!

Stay focused...accumulate and hold!

HKirby
