Yes, so long as the internal bandwidth support is good enough (MaxBus needed I'm sure), a quad-G4 SMP box should be able to do pretty much most of what Avid does now with its plug-in cards.

Like most things though, there'll probably always be a very high end market, and perhaps Avid thinks they can play in that space. My bet is that they end up like SGI... cannibalized from below by the PC makers.

What Apple really needs (if they have crossed the Rubicon and given up on Avid) is a hard-nosed marketing campaign aimed at all the existing Avid installations when their multiprocessor G4 box eventually ships.
