You're right, they don't have the authority to. But they can poke around and ask questions. If they felt there is a story here, they might be willing to get a subpoena, they do it all the time. In Canada, bid.com is a national business story and it might merit further investigation by the media. I know for a fact that many media outlets have been inundated with phone calls of foul by a specific securities dealer. There are also people discussing the feasibility of a class action suit against the dealer. But, for the possibility of a paid tout on this thread, there is evidence on SI's hard drive for at least a subpoena.
