Paul, What failings? It was Intels aggressive price cuts in the recent quarters that cost Intel billions and also cost AMD billions. Intel was still profitable by 2 billion and they did not need to cut the price as AMD had no way to ship any more chips. AMD sold all they made, and so Intel left an extra 2 billion on the table.
