Re: "AMD K7 500 trounces Pentium III/500 "

Why that's only an 8% difference and SPECfp results show that a 512K L2 Xeon beats a PIII by 9.3%. So based on these results, if they are true, a K7 will lose to an equally clocked PIII Xeon in FPU. A Coppermine will enjoy lower latency L2 so the gap should be even wider. What about the claims of "Worlds fastest processor"? The more I see about the real K7 the more I think AMD should go back to the foils.

For the SPECfp results I refer to see:

Richard - Re: " AMD K7 500 trounces Pentium III/500 "

TROUNCES ?

The fancy new 7'th generation desktop 7 beats the 4 year old P6 core by a measly 8% ?

ANd you claim an 8% increase is a TROUNCE !

Gee - you are grasping at straws !

By the way - why didn't you post the whole article - too embarrassed by its contents?

AMD investors should be interested in these comments:

AMD K7 500 trounces Pentium III/500

An engineer at AMD has leaked details of internal FPU (floating point unit) Winmarks on the up and coming K7 to The Register.

But at the same time he has said he is disappointed at the management and production problems at the firm.

The engineer, who insists on strict anonymity, said that the K7 running at 500MHz has an FPU Winmark of 2767. That compares to a Pentium III/500 which, he says, has an FPU Winmark of around 2562.

He said that he wanted to make clear that while AMD's technology is impressive, management "always give an optimistic outlook but then turn around and execute poorly."

He also said that he will tell us the shipping frequencies of the K7 when it ships in July, and the top frequency achieved so far. Watch out for updates. ®

Richard, An ounce is a trounce they say, as it matters not how much you win by, but that you win. Whether or not they are beating the xeon they will certainly cut a large hole in the high end with the 25% cheaper price scale. Intel will cut their prices and then all they will have is low end stuff and where will ASP go then?, down down down.
