Michael, thread, some talk came through here a while back about optical memory, and is it a threat to magnetic (and EMC). Here's an opinion from another thread. Apologies to Matthew for my plagiarizing.

Gilder's Microcosm sucks- he is an airhead of the first rank.
He said that HDD heads fly at "microns" and that optical will
replace magnetic storage. Well HDD heads fly at .01 microns or
about 100 Angstroms and optical will never replace magnetic
memory as a data technology. Thermo-magnetic assited writing or
more commonly called laser assisted writing may help push past
the superparamagnetic limits of the order of a few 100 Angstroms
or so ultimate bit sizes but it will still be magnetic storage for all
practical purposes, write with a thin film pole, read with MR,
GMR,CMR. Get the picture- Gilder is but a gadfly on the wall of
technology. I am sure he is great at a Harvard cocktail party. HA

So, now all we have to worry about is Intel, right? (wink, wink).

Tony
