but how do explain 11.8% market share for Dell in Q1 98,I don't recall Dell having that high a market share in Q1 98.Oh may be I am thinking about world wide market share.

Chuzz, They left out IBM. That would keep the numbers from totaling 100%.

According to Kemble's find from 'Wired' you are right on the money. Well done,glad somebody knows their math. Dell's market-share for Q1 was 9.1% not 11.8% as Infoworld reported.

...."Dell and Compaq were neck and neck for the top spot (in the United States)," said Christine Arrington, a personal computer industry analyst with Framingham, Massachusetts-based IDC.

'Dell shipped roughly 1.1 million computers in the second quarter, up more than 70 percent over last year, pushing its US market share to 14 percent from 9.1 percent a year ago.

Long-time market leader Compaq and fast-growing Dell each had 14.3 percent of total US PC shipments, according to IDC....
