Jim, I suspect the IDC and Dataquest numbers are significantly understating Dell's performance. If we consider that their numbers include January and January had to be a very slow month for Dell in the their Q4 '99 (since they had unit growth North of 50% in the calendar Q4 '98 and that unit growth came down significantly when they reported Q4 '99 which includes January '99), then Dell's January unit growth is probably diluting calendar Q1 '99 growth rate reported yesterday by IDC and Dataquest. The other factor to consider is that Dell's first quarter will exclude the poor January 1999 sales results and will include two full months of PIII and Gigabuys.com activity.
