gator,

First, to protect yourself, you must report that gun as stolen. I assume you purchased it legally as it could never be traced to you otherwise.

The gun owners I know have their guns insured against theft and would immediately report any theft to the authorities. Their insurance company already has serial numbers and pictures of the guns. If your gun is insured properly your friend's service is redundant as far as I can tell though not a bad idea. As to her keeping the info confidential that will only last until someone gets a warrant. Most insurance companies will require a very good reason if not an actual warrant before divulging any info.

If you buy a gun from a licensed dealer, your name and the gun's number are already known to the authorities, immediately reporting any theft should protect you. Those who buy from an individual may be well advised to register with a service like your friend's.

Hope this helps.

gator, Any regrets yet about starting this site? I think it has the potential of generating more message traffic and heated debate than most others without even addressing the original topic of voluntary registration (which sounds like it has some merit behind it provided the various courts will recognize and allow such information as evidence in trials, etc...)

Steve, I'm sure your friend, and you, have the very best of intentions. But, the liklihood of the independent database remaining private is questionable. Witness the emphatic comments of WTSherman on this thread. If given the slightest opportunity to invade it, do you think he and his ilk would respect the privacy of that database? Not likely. And, given the mindset of people in power these days, I don't think I'd care to trust anyone with such information about my possessions.

Before anyone decides to flame me for this, I'd like to remind then that the tobacco companies once thought they had a right to privacy in their internal memos. The Davidians thought they were safe from illegal search and seizure. In fact, if you look at the legacy of this administration, you'll find many similar instances of what people thought were constitutional rights being totally disregarded.

I don't intend for this to become a political discussion, only to offer reasons for people to not trust ANY central database for firearms registration. If you live someplace where firearms must be registered, you have my sympathy. In that case, perhaps your friend might have a service of value to all the condominium cowboys who are defying the law and owning unregistered guns. But, it seems to me that the market would be fairly small.

Remember, God created all men equal; Sam Colt helps them stay that way. [from an 1890's Colt revolver advertisement]

Gator, again, new to thread.

Your friends idea while it sounds good and is probably benign, I owuld never register my guns. Clinton is already having the ATF keep an illegal registry since the NICS went into operation. It is written in the law, the records shall be destroyed less than 24 hours after the BG check is complete. clinton is having them keep the records, specifically breaking the law again! He has no regards for laws the he sees as troubling. You are backing ideas by this man.
