The "captive audience" myth

You've certainly summarized the theory behind this myth, but is there any evidence that it has any validity? Brand building relies on enticing, not by coercion. This is especially true in the "friction-free" economy that the net enables. There is simply no way for a ham-fisted ISP to shackle its subscribers to a particular set of "approved" sites any more than a dealer can control where you choose to drive your car once you leave the lot.

Free internet service is already available. Try netzero.com for one. As with everything else, you get what you pay for, though it will undoubtedly be a "hot" IPO before long.
