I will take that as very grudging acceptance of my assertion that accounting gimmickry is important to these companies because they are afraid of shareholder reaction.

So what's wrong with my proposal to pay in cash? My reason for the preference is that cash payments will be accounted for properly, and that the employee is still free to use the cash to buy stock if he prefers. In fact, the company might even induce him to buy restricted stock by offering it at a slight discount -- say 15%. Wouldn't that be preferable to what is currently going on?
