You try to bind the employees with options on stock that may have a powerful upside and make them (they hope) wildly wealthy if they stick around for full vesting.

Yeah -- Borders' pres was fired after about 6 mos on the job (and shortly after I picked some up at a bargain) and they now say his buyyout will charge 4 cents a share. Haven't seen yet how much of that is buying back options, but it's damn hard to see how the shareholders benefited from this one.
