Yes, the direction is always to dig up "dirt". Like everyone has some dark secret. I think the people with traumatic memories usually can remember very well and maybe would like to forget! And we do discard the useless, unproductive memories I think. But they are always too easily "recovered", never needing any hypnosis or intensive counseling. *S*. I think it is people playing with other people's minds, for a buck! And the circumstances you describe do sound self serving. I've seen my trusted relatives become mysterious monsters when money was involved, like settling an estate! *shaking my head*.
