Nato behaving very un-Nato-like.

I take my hat off to you gmccon. I have tremendous respect for veterans. Both of my parents are veterans.

I think that it is time for the folks in charge of this little war to reflect a little on the broader implications of their own actions.

From the little that I understand about the World Court and international law NATO might find themselves responsible for reparations. This is not a U.N. sanctioned action and as far as I can see there was no threat to any NATO country.

The ethnic and religious fighting inside Kosovo and in the broader region is abhorant and most regretable. Once it gets heated up it is very difficult to tell the good guys from the bad guys and I would be prepared to grant that Maslovic has to take a lot of the credit for the mess.

What is most regretable about the whole thing is that I would have thought that in this day and age world leaders would recognize that it is often economic hardship, insecurity, and fear which gives rise to ethnic and religious tensions. I fail to see how bombing Serbia back to the stone age is going to help.

In the area of tactics on the battlefield there is a very important rule that all would be generals should know. Do not back the enemy into a corner- leave them an avenue to retreat. If you back your enemy into a corner they will fight much harder and it will cost you. If this is a military operation run by military people then you always leave the enemy an opportunity to become a friend-unless your intention is to totally humiliate and or destroy them-this is not a military objective-it would be a political objective.

The objective here seems to be to gain control of territory and what happens at the local level on the ground in Kosovo. In effect this would infringe on the sovereignty of the country. I do not expect that sovereignty or territory will be given up in the short term or the long term. NATO could probably take control militarily of the territory-but at what price and to what end.

If all the politicians, police and soldiers in the area could not maintain the peace why should we think that the imposed presence of NATO soldiers at this point is going to help? They may well find themselves in a crossfire and the hostilities will continue.

War is the total failure of diplomacy. It is indeed very sad to see 10s of billions of dollars being spent to destroy 100s of billions of dollars worth of infrastructure that both the Serbs and the Muslims will need in the future to maintain any kind of standard of living.

I wonder if we have a death and suffering toll and rate since the bombing started as compared to prior. Is it the "bad" guys who are being killed?

What else could be done at this point in time? What does Maslovic suggest as a solution? What could be done to improve the likelyhood of success for that solution? What is the alternative?

Cost benefit analysis anyone?

Many times Canada has not agreed with US foreign policy.Vietnam and Cuba are good examples. However, this time around, most Canadians, after seeing Malosivics record in Croatia and Bosnia support the US led effort in stopping his insanity. In this situation,if a draft was instituted I don't believe your kids would be welcome.IMHO

gmccon : It's not for me to criticise your country or anyone else's, for that matter. But I am very upset by the NATO intervention in Yugoslavia under the leadership of the present US administration.

Since you raised the subject of a sick society, however, I feel the recent school shootings are symptomatic of the means to power falling into the wrong hands. In other words, the Denver massacre is a parallel of the Kosovo situation. Misguided motives by people who don't understand and don't deserve power and too easy access to weapons. And a screwed up value system.

I'm not a military veteran. My experience of control over life and death situations is as a former anesthesiologist. And I can assure you because I have made mistakes, and seen others make mistakes, which cost some unfortunates their lives that I am aware of the enormous responsibility involved in such decisions. That is why I am critical, in fact contemptuous, of the NATO leadership which, I feel, has neither the experience nor the wisdom to make the decisions which they are now attempting to do. And, it is the repercussions of these decisions which we all will have to bear.

** NATO'S ALBANIAN GOONS FORCE UNCLE SAM TO
VACATE WHITE HOUSE

(Washington, DC) Costumed members of the Clinton Investigative Commission
(CIC)
were violently assaulted by a mob of more than 40 ethnic Albanians
across from the White House on the first day of the 50th anniversary
summit of NATO (Friday, April 23). The CIC members were engaged in an
anti-Clinton demonstration when an angry mob of pro-Clinton/pro-NATO
Albanians descended upon them.

"When the Albanians saw that CIC's Uncle Sam was against being a puppet
of NATO they attacked us in front of the White House. If this is what NATO
brings to the Capitol -- Albanians who attack peaceful demonstrators who
frequently gather outside the White House-- what are we funding NATO for?"
asked a CIC spokesman.

Members of CIC walked in front of the White House with signs that said
"NATO GO
HOME", "Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam, Puppets of NATO" .

"Heil to NATO, Heil our Loss of the Constitution, Heil our loss of
sovreignty" chanted
a CIC demonstrator, potraying his dissatisfaction of the current situation.

"At no time did we or any member of our peace loving group say anything else"
said a spokesman, responding to a libelous and slanderous report that CIC
members had said "Heil Hitler" to taunt pro-Clinton demonstrators.

One CIC member, portraying ‘Uncle Sam' as a puppet of NATO with
black yarn as strings tied to a puppeteer in a NATO helmut and battle
fatigues, was
thrown to the ground and repeatedly kicked and beaten. Uncle Sam had a large
red, white and blue top hat, pants and jack with a red white and blue bow
tie. Several
Albanians screamed, “Hang Uncle Sam!” Two other CIC members, including a
young
woman dressed as Lady Liberty (the Statue of Liberty) with a silver crown
and silver
gown were pushed and shoved into concrete pillars, while others fled
across the
street towards safety.

Uncle Sam's red white and blue hat was stomped on and the stars were pulled
off
the hat by the pro-Clinton demonstrators.

Police officers rushed to the scene to hold back the horde
of angry Albanians. It was so chaotic that H St. NW (between 15th &
16th Streets) was briefly blocked with police squad cars and
motorcycles. Several CIC members were packed into bulletproof cars and
driven off . When safety was finally restored, the assaulted
members of CIC were able to file a criminal report with the U.S. Park
Police.

Washington DC's local NBC affiliate Channel 4 aired footage of the
attack with the mob assaulting Uncle Sam on camera. Various local news outlets
aired reports of "Uncle Sam Attacked".

“NATO brought violent Albanians to Washington. This violence has been
caused by the
loss of American soreignty to NATO. NATO has come to gloat over our loss of
sovreignty and closed down the area that has been open to free speech for
years,"
said a spokesman for CIC. And the spokesman added "It's crazy. I mean,
thanks to President Clinton, our American soldiers are risking their lives
so that the Albanians can come here and shut down free speech at our
White House.”

The Clinton Investigative Commission (CIC) is a grass-roots organization
with over 60,000 members nationwide and has held numerous demonstrations
in front of the White House in authentic political street theatre.
CIC's activities have generated more than 20 million visits to its web
site impeachclinton.org.

gmccon,

<<Canadians are such hypocrites about that sort of thing, they'd go along with NATO,>>

Not sure if this is true .... if our participation were put to a vote tomorrow, I am not sure it would be a yea. Of course we do not condone what is happening, but the course of action thus far has not been very helpful.
