Thanks--the Siegel piece is cut out from the newspaper and folded and lying on top of my monitor. Like many accurate assessments, however, it may take a while to really sink in. Or rather, it will take a while for a lot of other people to discover the same conclusions for themselves.

I am astonished at the lack of interest in the securities markets on the part of any branch of the United States government. Greenspan seems bemused, but that's about it. I am not aware of a single congressman who has said anything about it--or even any government economists. Clinton has been too busy with women and war to give it a thought. In this respect, we are even worse served than the 1920s, at which time there were warnings from various bankers and politicians. The only thing to compare it to in my lifetime (and it's not much of a comparison) is the early stages of the Vietnam disaster, before the unwisdom of the enterprise began to be obvious. The whole country is sleepwalking.
