A complete STB that is ready to manufacture in volume has to be the priority, in the beginning. We have seen a lot of OEMs change chips or platforms just to meet launch dates. Other services have delayed their launch because the STB is not ready on time. A new product, like the DCT-5000 has a lot of parts that need to work together. In 1996, EchoStar planned to use C-Cube chips, a Divicom design, and software from Segem(Divicom's parent at the time). When the software wasn't ready, they switched to an LSI design. Two weeks latter, C-Cube announced they were acquiring Divicom. The bottom line is that if the box doesn't work, it really doesn't matter what it costs.
