A dozen other companies have built auction technology just like BIDS but BIDS has a US patent on a specific technology - The declining auction or also known as in some circles as the "Dutch Auction". Nobody else has the right to use this process electronically. That would include not just the Web, but TV, Cable and Satellite. There are certain products and services that decline in value as time goes on. For example, vacation packages, travel, hotel rooms, flowers (as the dutch use this form of auction in Holland, hence the name). BIDS also has strength in liquidations (they were formerly known as Internet Liquidators) and this is going to be the main focus of their business to business side of things.

That's the difference and it's a HUGE difference. If there wasn't this difference then there wouldn't be such excitement about the company. Remember, Bid.Com may licence its patent to other auction houses, they have no right to use it otherwise.

Sean,
Bid.com has recently started selling higher margin items. They are progressively reaching a point where there margin rates will be higher altogether. Plus, they are licensing their computerized declining auction patent to many companies who have a need to sell items over the internet this way. They have begun to get into the B2B, as this seems to be the larger source of revenue in the future. Also, they are expanding into Europe and other overseas areas, setting up offices to license and help maintain use of their technology, so they have several revenue streams. I think they have done much to improve their business model and will be a major competitor to Ubid and Onsale.

Sean, FINALLY a voice of reason in a sea of BII LOVE. As you may have noticed form my various posts on this topic, I believe that this is a very IMPORTANT ISSUE that is not being recognized by the BII BOOSTERS. Why this group chooses to sweep this under the rug is a mystery to me.

>>the tiny margin (3%) on their sales makes it near impossible to generate the kind of profitability that is expected of Internet companies
