Riot Police Break Up Student Party

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Amsterdam riot police stormed a house on one of the city's main streets early Sunday to break up
a drunken party of up to 1,000 students after it deteriorated into an orgy of vandalism.

Police sealed off Weesperstraat, a major traffic artery, after revelers under the influence of drink and drugs started throwing
household goods from the windows of the house onto the road below, police spokesman Arie Zandbergen said.

He said police had monitored the party, attended by an estimated 1,000 students, throughout the night and had moved to
evacuate the building at around 3 am as the revelry spiraled out of control.

''Several dozen police in riot gear went in to clear the building after students started throwing televisions, refrigerators and
fire extinguishers onto the street,'' Zandbergen said.

He said police had used batons to disperse the sometimes violent crowd but that no one had been injured. ''The majority
were very drunk and some may have taken a pill (the hallucinogen Ecstasy) or two,'' he said.

Order was restored at around 6 a.m. and the roadblock removed.

Four youths had been arrested and were in custody sobering up with little or no idea what had happened, Zandbergen added.
