And some companies are taking that new tool even further, by offering technology that can insert virtual products and brand logos into a sitcom or sporting event live or in post production. Software allows home viewers to see commercial images not visible to audiences in a studio or at the game.

"Recently, on the UPN show 'Seven Days,' we did some insertions into the show," said James Appleby, of New Jersey-based Princeton Video Image. "We digitally placed bottles of Evian water into a scene involving an office meeting. I think we also inserted a Blockbuster cassette case onto a table next to a television set.
