Dave,

E*trade, as far as I can tell, cares nothing whatsoever about turnover. NOTHING! Normal companies do care about turnover. But E*trade doesn't, because E*trade isn't a normal company motivated by factors the rest of the world considers normal motivating factors. An analogy might be that the current Serbian dictator isn't motivated by the same factors as normal people throughout the civilized world.

E*trade spends about $400 for each customer [sucker] they get. If a sucker splits, so what? What do they care? If they spend $400 for each sucker, and get only $100, for example, in return from the sucker before the sucker wises up and leaves, then they write off the $300 difference. But my guess is that perhaps they make somewhat more than $400 on the average sucker before the average sucker wises up and splits.

IMO, what I think motivates E*trade is one thing, and one thing only...market share. Thus, so long as E*trade takes in more new suckers faster than the old suckers can head for the exit doors, E*trade makes money on their turnover, and at the same time inches closer and closer to market share dominance. Neat, huh?

That strategy might work for a while longer, but the plan, IMO, will eventually run out of steam and they'll be forced to change tactics. It's only a matter of time. Much as the existing Serbian dictator will eventually be forced to change his tactics.
