Robert,

Bill G's ambition goes far beyond dollars and cents. Many people (myself included) believe that he aspires to play a major role in weaving America's cultural fabric. $$$$ and computer are just avenues used to get there.

I heard him speak once, articulating his as well as MSFT's distant dreams. He, at the time, considered DIS to be one of MSFT's ultimate rivals. Thus it had to be something on a higher level than just earnings and market shares.

It's a defensive move. Bill Gates realizes that, under the guise of introducing competition into the local phone market, Ma Bell is transforming itself into Ma Cable.

Once T reaches a critical cable mass, it and not MS will dictate which OS is running on digital settop boxes (read: the next generation of home personal computers).

In addition, T will be able to put a squeeze on cable content providers, both broadcast and interactive...
