George: I've just started researching the company and the technology so I dont have much to add about that at this point. I think if you look at IBI in the context of it's name , International Business Investments, then Memex fits under that umbrella rather than the category of IBI as a mining company. I'm waiting for more to unfold about this aquisition and how it fits into the long range plans of IBI. Other companies have made some similar moves in the past. I'm thinking of CMOZ which was MISM which started out ( and I may be muddy in my recall here ) aquiring a tire company, then a prezel company then some interent stuff. Recently WRN which is in oil and gas bought a company that makes safety bars for school busses. Even Intel just announced a move into providing servers for small business groups.
I have worked in quality control and manufacturing control and am finding Memex to be an intriguing technology with or without IBI's investment. One thing I have found out about Memex is that their technology is proprietary, first to market and looks to be very profitable. They have a very blue chip client base, Boeing and Catipillar amongst them. In some people's minds owning a fertilizer company in Uganda is not very "sexy" but a technology company with
Internet in it's description as well as a blue chip client list carries a more comfortable niche for investors. I'm hoping more information comes out soon about how this new aquisition fits into the SLRP ( strategic long range planning) goals for ibi as this was an unexpected suprise to me...but as i find out more about MEMEX, not unpleasant at all.
