Bold new NATO sees variety of threats

<< The horizons of future action to protect NATO states now extends well beyond their borders, stretching hazily to the East and South. And their justification for intervention will be based on a mixture of self-defence and humanitarian need. >>

Lorne - this is not stricly in reply to you - but to someone else - but for some reason I got an error message when I tried to reply to whoever sent me the message - so whoever sent it is for you!!

"Now why do you suppose the Europeans haven't cleaned this up on their own?" - Because they needed US support and participation - but it is, for all that, a European affair - there is absolutely no way that the US could have acted on it's own - in fact it may have been reluctant to act at all. Another of the many ironies here.

As for the assertion that it would have been better not to act at all - it has the beauty of all such assertions - it can't be proved! dd
