You're forgetting that it is entirely possible for a competing central domain service to appear.

All it takes is a large enough amount of people deciding to start their own naming system, and a central registry can be set up- or you can hardwire web browsers to search for DNS from joe.blow.com instead of internic's database.

"RealName" is a competing names database that is already built into IE5 and Netscape 5.
