RTev, I suspect they had discussions with Maffei before the veto of the Roadrunner CEO position. Even the recent uncertainty of that company due to the AT&T proposed acquition of Media One could have been a factor in Gates and/or Maffei's decision. I think it may have been a friendly conversation between the two. Furthermore, Maffei probably also realizes that getting MSN would be a better deal than trying Roadrunner. Even as a CEO of Roadrunner, he would not be in control as the big shareholders will dictate where the company is to go based upon their own possibly different interests. At least with MSN, he would have the backing by the MSFT board especially if he is as good as everyone believes at MSFT.
As the head of MSN, I believe he will strengthen it considerably. How? The "build up" of his abilities has taken place (outside of Microsoft) already, thanks to Roadrunner.
IMHO, now is the time to get a high-profile announcement for MSN.
---and this appears to be Greg Maffei. It will become a high profile event.
