No the Dutch auction is not just an American thing. They only put what they did on the front page to make people know that Americans CAN participate in the dutch auction.

On the front page there is a button you press to choose if you want to participate in the Canadian one or the American one (you can only participate in the country in which you are a resident).

They separate them I guess so that the customer can avoid having to pay duties and brokerage fees. Very smart and customer oriented idea. I know that Amazon doesn't even do this, they tell the customer that if you are not an American resident you're SOL with regard to duties and brokerage fees(not very helpful). Amazon says that's your problem not theirs.

I imagine that the other auction companies follow similar guidelines to Amazon and not ones similar to BIDS. That doesn't motivate me to buy from EBAY or UBID as a Canadian especially when my duty and brokerage fee can exceed the cost of my purchase.

Unlike EBAY and UBID , BIDS understands that there is a border between the two countries. You have to make it easy for customers in both countries to buy (which BIDS obviously is doing). I can appreciate the trouble BIDS has gone through to set up this type of arrangement because I also have an Internet business and have had to deal with similar issues. You can't tell the customer the problem is his. He'll just go somewhere else.

They obviously service the American population from an American warehouse and the Canadian population from a Canadian warehouse. Makes sense. Also much more economical and convenient for the customer. I'm really looking forward to becoming one of BIDS new customers.

Also because BIDS has an American warehouse and a Canadian warehouse, vendors would prefer to deal more through BIDS than EBAY or UBID because it allows them to reach the Canadian population as well without the barrier to entry. The barrier to entry being the border/customs.
