Mang: Interesting article...thanks. Yet...we already know what the strategy is within the networking sector. It all boils down to signal processing and who has the best technology to move the traffic (VVD)at greater speeds than what is at present. I foresee cable as being the choice (fiber optics)will carry main data to substations and from there cable will carry data to households. Cox cable...I believe has more fiber layout than the phone company(s)at present. Phone companies do not want to be left behind...consequently at some point the phone companies will have to change out their outmoded systems. 3com already has the server to talk over the computer. That is where the "French" connection comes into play! Once VVD are commercialzed...satellites will carry a majority of data to locations that do not have ground based networks. Iridium and others are aware of this lucrative market and are placing themselves in position to be "on board" and fully operational. Basically we will have "swithboards" in the sky and will not have to rely upon ground based stations anymore! A considerable amount of varible costs will disappear when satellites carry the bulk of VVD traffic! It is surprising to me that most of the so called technical analyst(s)on WS cannot see what is coming. Momentum players are going to be caught aginst the wall when DSL takes hold ! They s/b concentrating upon those companies that are developing DSL technology.
Switches and routers will become obsolete comparable to the old six cylinder engins being overtaken by more efficient six cylinders. Electronic technology is advancing extremely rapidly...especially in thin film processing and we should see more memory cabability allowing higher data rates to the personal computer. I would not be surprised if within 5yrs we will see a computer with processing speed of a few gigahertz! This will clear up the congestion on the information highway considerable. It is also surprising to me to see the lack of knowledge of investors as to why this technology should remain in our mkt...it is not the hardware aspect that concerns me but the "intellectual assets" that will be acquired! It takes years to develop these assets and they are not as easily replaced as hardware! It is easy to put a value on hardware but much more difficult to place a value on intellectual talent. Anyone in the scientific and engineering field can attest to this factor ! Technical analyst(s) seem more orientated towards the hardware (products) than to the actual intellectual assets of the firms! Looking at the balance sheets does not give a true perspective as to this extremely important asset(s)! The Europeans on the other hand recognize this factor and know quite well that we are way ahead of them and the only way they can "catch up" is to acquire this knowledge at bargain basement prices! These so called technical experts on WS have not spent any amount of time at a lab bench working on "conceptual" design(s)that will drive the next wave of telecommunications. A subscription to IEEE and the forums that they offer will keep an investor much more informed as to what is coming down the "pipe line" than relying on these WS analyst(s) who's main purpose is to acquire business for the firms they work for. Once the typical investor becomes aware of this factor...they will not take these analyst's at their word! Investors will become more value orientated and will rely less upon these individuals! At this level 3com is one hell of a bargain...taking away their cash...it is selling a little over 1x its value. Anyone with a background in Finance recognizes this and that is why the volumn has been increasing and will continue to increase during these coming weeks. If 3com reports a good qtr or meets/exceeds expectations...it will certainly be in the mid 30's! Smart money is smart because they are never left behind...they are on the moving wagon long before anyone else...and that is exactly what is presently occuring.

Good luck...stay focused,

HKirby
