I want to clarify that I have nothing against Maffei. It sounds like he's a very smart guy and a very good negotiator who would do a great job in the Consumer division where part of the job will be merging new companies into the existing division.

What I would question is the timing of any announcement like that. If he's so good and if he made it clear before the reorganization that he wanted to run the division, then why did Gates and Ballmer have to be forced by RoadRunner into seeing it? The problem is that what could have been seen as a bold move last month when the reorganization was announced, now looks like a defensive move -- a way to keep a good employee who has forced their hands.

Additionally this move would follow my suggestion in an earlier post before this move by MSFT went public. I guess they pay pretty close attention to this board out at Redmond.

It's pretty hard to gauge when one is making a joke in this imperfect medium, but I would hope that you don't honestly believe that MSFT is making policy based on your posts here on SI, John!

At any rate, I agree that things have changed since Maffei was kept out of the reorg. MSFT has had to consider life without Maffei, and apparently Bill didn't like the picture.
