Communists wanted to seize the land, have the poor milk the cow and pour the milk away, shoot the cow and let the meat rot.
Socialists wanted to nationalize the land and cow, have the poor milk the cow and drink the milk and eat the cows.
Liberals want to tax the land and cows and milk and beef and use it to feed the social workers and teachers for the poor.
Libertarians want everyone to do just as they please and feast upon any cows and poor that they can hunt down and shoot.
Capitalists want to make the milk into cheese to export to rich Americans, and let the poor live on cow droppings if they can.

Liberals are generally compassionate towards the poor and suffering and less able among us, and acknowledge some debt as humans to help them, even though sometimes the help is not really always helpful, as in the awful dependency created by the welfare state. They also often have a concern for ecological issues, and are willing to make sacrifices to not pollute the environment.

Libertarians are an every-man-for-himself bunch, not surprisingly comprised of the most able (and greedy) people in the general populace. They are also gung-ho industrialists and rapists of the land and the waters of earth.

The only commonality I see is that on issues of personal freedom, like drug usage, there is some agreement between the two groups. On other issues of personal freedom, like handguns, there is no agreement at all.

<<Actually, Ish, I would say that libertarians ARE liberals, indeed of the most radical variety, if the term "liberal" is used in its original meaning. >>

"Original meaning". There's the rub. Today's liberals are for more government not less.
