It is my understanding that part of their phone-booth strategy is to provide them on demand to high volume events like the olympics, and also disaster relief areas.

Herc, With a small fee based on a smart card, or even coins in secure locations that is the way to go. The booths can have more power and capability than can be packed into a handset and the wired stages can be bypassed. Some kind of hybrid will emerge as the field looks a bit crowded(or soon will be). There is just no way Ir can pay the debts and some kind of swap/sale/siezure/merger is certain.
