did you read the part after the paragraph you quoted? It said that if the auctioneer find any further items in his database or warehouse, they can be marked down in reaction to market demand.

Furthermore, just wondering why the merchandise catalog needs to be updated after the markdown? BIDS doesn't need to.

That is why I interpreted the markdown feature the way I did.
