God. I lived in NYC for two years, took a job on Wall Street, lived over on Staten Island (had entire 1st floor of a house) and commuted by the ferry (which was actually fun except in the really hot days of summer), but at NYC, couldn't WAIT to get out. But my father lived mid-side East (E20s) for 20 years in a basically one-room apartment (did have a kitchen smaller than a closet in my house, a dressing room leading into the bathroom my cat couldn't turn around to lick herself in, the main room was okay sized, but my God he and his 2nd wife lived there for five years until she died, then he lived there alone . . . and loved it! Rent controlled, of course.) My sister and her first husband also lived on the upper West Side for about five years. (They did have a 3 room apt, but still...) That kind of action I could do without!
