If Intel buys the servers (as it says it will) it will lock in customers for Xeons, Merced, and future chips for a growing fraction of web server business regardless of what Sunw, Compaq, or AMD might do. This is a masterstroke of strategy.

Dear kash: As I posted before they will be doing this as a pilot prototype hoping that the idea will catch on and that the traditional box makers will seize the opportunity. If the traditional boxmakers lag behind then INTC will push on. Again the purpose of this gambit is to pave the way for more high performance cpu sales as well as relieving bottlenecks that diminish the need for high performance cpu's at the terminal ends of the network.

kash. Re: "Surely, they will start to end up competing with their customers. As long as they buy servers from their customers, I don't think there's reason to complain. This action may in fact stimulate the entire data center business.

I think Intel's goal as always is to 1) sell more chips and 2) eliminate any bottlenecks that hold down growth in PC sales and e-commerce. So this move, while a little lateral to their main business is in line with their overall strategy.

Re: "It is also not clear to me how high margin this business will be as a stand alone service. It's not clear to me either. This makes me nervous too.
