Well, as the struggling parent of a fifteen-year-old girl, I can tell you that it is very difficult to really know everything that is going on with children this age, without creating a police state in your home. (And that, of course, would totally and finally drive them absolutely away from you.) They really live in worlds of their own, and even when you feel like you are communicating openly with them, it is sometimes illusory. I feel that the state has a much larger responsibility in this, since children, no matter how disturbed, did not massacre each other until they had the weapons to do so. What used to be a fistfight is now often a murder. Curiously, they do not often kill each other in countries with better handgun control.
