Somemore stuff to ponder, m.philli,

The great thing about Brazil is modern methods of dredging and alluvial diamond mining have barely scratched the surface here. When high quality, large scale deposits of diamonds were found in Africa, Brazil diamond mining slipped into oblivion, even though this was the main source of diamonds in much of the 1800's for the world.

Besides the concentrating effect that river systems have on diamonds,...by trapping the liberated diamonds in slow current areas of the river,...rivers break up the crappy diamonds so alluvials tend to give higher valuations ( $US/carat) than their parent hardrock deposits. The original deposit may be uneconomic to mine, but the alluvial deposits can still be worth mining. The fact that big diamonds of gem quality have been found in the rivers, suggests that the original deposits have a good chance of being economic as well.
